هل توجد حياة في البحر الميت؟

The Dead Sea is one of the strangest areas of water to be found on the earth. Millions of years ago, the Dead Sea was about 420 meters higher than it is today, and so it was on a higher level than the Mediterranean. At that time, life did exist in it. But then a great dry period came, and so much of it evaporated that the sea gradually shrank in size to its present state.

One of the most amazing things about the Dead Sea is the amount of salt it contains. Normal ocean water contains about 4 to 6 per cent of salts. The Dead Sea contains 23 to 25 per cent of salts! If you taste this water, it is not only salty, but it may make you feel sick because of the magnesium chloride in it.

No animal life can exist in the Dead Sea. The River Jordan flows into it, bringing fish along with it. But the fish die, furnishing food for the sea birds.

يعد البحر الميت من أغرب المناطق المائية الموجودة على الأرض. منذ ملايين السنين, كان البحر الميت مرتفعا ً بحوالي 420 مترا ً عن وضعه الحالي, وبالتالي كان أعلى مستوى ً من البحر المتوسط. وجدت فيه الحياة في تلك الفترة, ولكن حقبة ً من الجفاف العظيم لحقت تلك المنطقة, مما أدى إلى تبخر كبير سبب التقلص في حجم البحر إلى ما هو عليه الآن.

إن كميات الملح الضخمة الموجودة في البحر الميت لهي أمرٌ مدهش في العالم. فمياه المحيطات الطبيعية تحتوي على حوالي 4 إلى 6 بالمئة من الملح, بينما يحتوي البحر الميت على نسبة 23 إلى 25 بالمئة من الملح! في حال تذوقت هذه المياه فلن تشعر فقط بالملوحة الزائدة فحسب, بل ستشعر بالغثيان بسبب كلوريد المغنزيوم.

وهكذا, لا يمكن وجود أي حياة في البحر الميت. ورغم تدفق نهر الأردن إليه حاملا ً الأسماك, فإنها تموت بمجرد وصولها إليه, وتصبح طعاما ً لطيور البحر.
